born 1982 in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Tobias Spichtig moves easily between painting, sculpture, installation, and performance — and between Berlin and Zürich. His portraits read as half-icon, half-ghost: friends, designers, musicians, the people he runs into, drawn in sharp dark lines, big black eyes, saturated grounds. Each face holds its pose somewhere between fashion plate and existentialist stand-in. The paintings sit alongside sculptures of clothing dipped in resin, sometimes nickel-plated — empty hoodies, jackets, dresses standing in for the body — and installations of mattress fields and mounded refrigerators. Spichtig calls this attention to everyday objects a material spiritualism.
"Bodies, faces, flowers, or mountains never quite emerge from their planar surfaces, holding their pose in strange, morbid stillness." – Elena Filipovic
His work has been exhibited at Lafayette Anticipations, Paris; the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art, Berlin; the Swiss Institute, New York; the Boros Foundation / Berghain, Berlin; Kaleidoscope at Spazio Maiocchi, Milan; the Centre d'art contemporain – la synagogue de Delme; SALTS, Basel; the Museum Folkwang, Essen; the Dortmunder Kunstverein; Malta Contemporary Art, Valletta; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; Ludlow 38 (Goethe-Institut), New York; the Ursula Blickle Foundation, Karlsruhe; and the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam.
Two solo exhibitions were the starting point of his most recent series: Everything No One Ever Wanted at Kunsthalle Basel, curated by Elena Filipovic, and It's Beautiful When the Spirits Arrive at Tao Art, Taipei. In 2026, Jan Kaps presents him at Art Basel Unlimited with a major installation.
