Daniel Dewar born 1976 in Forest of Dean, United Kingdom.
Grégory Gicquel born 1975 in St. Brieuc, France.
Working together since 1998, Daniel Dewar and Grégory Gicquel make sculpture rooted in handcraft. Embroidery and quilting, wood-fired stoneware, oak and marble carving, silk painting — they take up techniques rarely associated with contemporary sculpture and push them to monumental scale, producing each work themselves over weeks or months. Farm animals, local plants, body fragments, household objects: these appear and reappear in their oeuvre, summoned out of materials that hold their own kinship to nature. Across the work, the dignity of labor sits alongside the eccentricity of the image.
"Daniel Dewar and Grégory Gicquel's collaborative art practice evokes a contemporary pastoral world through a monumental approach to craft practices." – Kevin Gallagher
Their work has been exhibited at the Centre Pompidou, Paris; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Musée Rodin, Paris; Z33 House for Contemporary Art, Hasselt; MACRO – Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome; Culturgest, Lisbon; the Secession, Vienna; Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden; Kunsthalle Basel; Portikus, Frankfurt; Kunstinstituut Melly (formerly Witte de With), Rotterdam; KIOSK, Ghent; Wiels Contemporary Art Center, Brussels; the Van Buuren Museum & Gardens, Brussels; Santa Barbara Museum of Art; Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; and CAPC, Bordeaux. They have participated in the Biennale de Lyon and the Yokohama Triennial, and in 2012 they were awarded the Prix Marcel Duchamp.
In 2023, The Bidet and the Jar, curated by Luca Lo Pinto, opened at MACRO – Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome. In 2025, Z33 House for Contemporary Art, Hasselt, presented The Wet Wing, curated by Kevin Gallagher, for which the duo produced a monumental silk painting alongside new marble and stoneware works.
