Made using salvaged bra straps, torn lace, fabric, and clasps from used lingerie, this monumental installation carries the personal histories and lived experiences of their previous owners. By working with these conceptually loaded materials to evoke the associated ideas of sex and control, Kresiah Mukwazhi challenges the cultural norms and taboos imposed on women and their bodies in order to address latent forms of patriarchy and systemic violence. Informed by her own observations of gender-based violence and sexual exploitation in Zimbabwe, her work advocates for the visibility and rights of women who face discrimination.
